I explained she could do this or that, and could try this idea or that idea. Then she touched my arm to stop my talking and said, "Don't worry, Miss Brown. I'll speak to him." And she ran off.

I stood and watched her. It took less than a minute for the two new friends to-run off hand in hand to happily join-in a game.

    My sweet little girl was right. I did not need to solve the problem for her. She spoke to the kid fluently and accomplished what she had been told to do.

I often think of that small moment, and what it taught me. We must be ready to learn from our students; the "teachable moments"-that occur at school are for us, the teachers, as well as for our kids.
