问题详情:
A girl from Montclair, New Jersey, Charlotte Alter, who is now in her twenties, wrote on that when she was 12, her mother told her: “I don’t want to frighten you, but I think you may have put on a little weight.”
Contrary to popular belief about body confidence, the remark did not harm her self-respect and actually benefited her in the long run. Her mother obviously told her honestly at the time: “It’s only three or four pounds, and it’s not the end of the world. It happens to everyone. I’ll help you figure it out.” Instead of giving her a complex about her weight, Miss Alter says her mother’s openness made her aware of her body in a healthy way.
My mother decided to name the demo (恶魔) and teach me how to deal with it, which revealed the weight loss process and made it a lot less frightening.” she wrote.
To get her back on the right track, her mother suggested she stop eating desserts for two weeks and run two laps around a park near her house every day. When she completed the two weeks as suggested, her mother congratulated her. “The next time I asked her if I looked fat, she said I looked great. And I believed her,” recalled Miss Alter.
“She was concerned about me: she noticed that I wasn’t exercising, that my clothes weren’t fitting me properly, that I would…look glum in the mirror.” She said she was able to develop a healthy and practical attitude to weight loss and nutrition. Indeed, she feels her attitude is much healthier than that of her peers, many of whom find themselves torn between their mothers’ promise of unconditional love and society’s opposing message.
What’s more, whenever her mother told her it might be time to lose weight, Miss Alter wrote, “It didn’t feel like a condemnation (责备). It felt like a reality check.”
