people are afraid to spend money now, says Linda White, who owns a shoe and handbag store. They don’t know what the future will bring. During the financial crisis (金融危机), several big banks in the country have to close or be sold. This has made lots of Americans afraid to buy expensive things. Tony Brown, a restaurant owner in New York, has found everyone is asking for free water instead of buying juice. And more and more people would like to share meals with their friends.
In more than 24 interviews across the country last month, Americans talked about their concerns, from worries about small businesses to worries about how to make a living.
The crisis started in 2008. Most people think it was because US banks lent money too easily. A lot of people and companies couldn’t pay money back to banks. This made the banks lose plenty of money. Because the banks also borrowed money from each other and even from banks in other countries, the whole world was in trouble.
Early in January last year, the US agreed to make a plan to spend over 700 billion (十亿) dollars in order to save the financial market. But no one was sure whether it would help or not. President Barack Obama said it would take some time. Luckily, the leaders from 20 countries promised(承诺) to work together to fight against(抵抗) the financial crisis.
