The black taxi or cab is one of the most famous symbols in London. In the 17th century, London saw its first black cabs but these were very different from today’s vehicles because they were pulled by horses.

However, their influence is still felt today because in 1679, the British government passed a law requiring all vehicles to pass a test to make sure they were safe for passengers. This law is still in force today. Also, the very earliest cars were called “horseless carriages”  because they were very much like the shape of the carriages formerly pulled by horses.

Over the years, the design of the London black cab has changed; perhaps the biggest improvement is that the modern cab has wheelchair access. Even so, the basic image is still the same, a black cab that stands for a tradition of service and efficiency of which the London “cabbies” are justifiably(无可非议地) proud. In fact, the cabbies are some of the mist highly trained people in London. Before anyone is given a license to drive a black cab, a person must pass a test called “The Knowledge”. This involves learning by heart the 320 main routes, and all their tourist attractions in central London. During the test, drivers are not allowed to receive radio assistance or to use satellite navigation. This test is so difficult. It takes some people years to learn all the information. In London, you will often see men riding around on motorbikes with a map clipped onto its handlebars. These are “Knowledge boys”---people trying to learn all the routes so they can pass the test.

So the next time you take a black cab, don’t be surprised that the cabbie seems to be very widely read and full of wisdom. After all, he had to pass“ The Knowledge” to get his license.
