The black taxi or cab is one of the most famous symbols in London. In the 17th century, London saw its first black cabs but these were very different from today’s vehicles because they were pulled by horses.

In London, you will often see men riding around on motorbikes with a map clipped onto its handlebars. These are “Knowledge boys”---people trying to learn all the routes so they can pass the test.

    So the next time you take a black cab, don’t be surprised that the cabbie seems to be very widely read and full of wisdom. After all, he had to pass“ The Knowledge” to get his license.
