Dogs will refuse food offered by people who have refused to help their owners, some researchers said last Friday. The study led by the researchers showed that dogs have the ability to co-operate(合作) socially- an ability found in a small number of species, including humans and some other primates(灵长类动物).
The researchers tested three groups of 18 dogs using role plays in which their owners needed to open a box. In all three groups, the owner was with two people whom the dog did not know. In the first group, the owner tried to get assistance from one of the other people who actively refused to help. In the second group, the owner asked for, and received, help from one person. In both groups, the third person neutral (中立的). They neither helped nor refused to help. Neither person interacted with the owners in the third group.
After watching the box-opening scene, the dog was offered food by the two unfamiliar people in the room. Dogs that saw their owner being refused would choose food from the neutral person and ignore the offer from the person who had refused to help their owner. Dogs whose owner was helped and dogs whose owner did not interact with either person showed no preference (偏爱) for accepting food from the strangers.
The ability is present in children from the age of about three. And this study showed that dogs share this ability with humans. “Interestingly,” said one of the researchers, “there is a similar study that showed tufted capuchins (a kind of monkey native to South America) have this ability, but there is no evidence (根据) that chimpanzees(黑猩猩) show a preference.”
